Pfizer is recalling the popular erectile dysfunction (ED) drug Cialis after it was found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke in some patients.
The manufacturer of Cialis said Thursday it was reviewing its recall. The company said the increased risk of heart attack and stroke is a side effect of the drug and does not appear to have affected the heart or blood vessels. It has been prescribed to millions of men with erectile dysfunction since the drug was discovered.
Cialis (the generic version of the drug called Levitra) has been prescribed to millions of men with erectile dysfunction since it was discovered in the early 1990s. The Food and Drug Administration has been requiring erectile dysfunction drugs for many years to be monitored for side effects. Cialis was also approved for use in adults for men with low blood pressure and in men with certain eye conditions.
The drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, said the safety and efficacy of Cialis have been confirmed by several studies and clinical trials in more than 50,000 men over a 12-year period.
"The safety of Cialis has been confirmed in more than 40 trials and over more than 10,000 men in more than 500 countries," said Dr. Albert Woodcock, the company's chief medical officer. The drug is used to treat men with a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia. This condition causes an enlarged prostate to fill with urine.
About 1.8 million men in the U. S. suffer from erectile dysfunction. About 80 percent of these men have some form of the condition. However, the most common cause of this condition is not the prostate itself, which is a fluid that can build up in the urethra.
Cialis is manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company and is sold under the brand name Levitra. Cialis is the only erectile dysfunction drug to have been available over the Internet in the U. and is not available in some other countries.
Pfizer is recalling the drug, which is the generic version of Levitra, for the potential risk of heart attack and stroke.
"Pfizer is notifying patients of this adverse event and is continuing to advise patients of the increased risk of heart attack and stroke in some cases, including those patients who have heart disease and who take nitrates," said Dr. Andrew Witty, Pfizer's president and CEO. "This recall is not a voluntary recall and we will update our consumer information with the results of our clinical trials."
Cialis is available in two doses: 20 milligrams and 40 milligrams. The higher doses are available only with a prescription.
